LOW COST INTERVENTIONS HELP
Delhi has shown that if proper interventions are done we can reduce accidents and deaths on roads. City has seen decline in accidents for third continuous year.
This time we focussed on roads having maximum accidents and had low cost interventions awaiting long term interventions by concerned civic agencies. We concentrated on speed calming measures, speed checks, putting pedestrian lights, getting signages done from agencies and checking of commercial vehicles on certain roads and we are happy that in first six months accidents on 20 roads which had maximum accidents in 2011 have shown 32% decline in accidents. While first half of 2011 saw 478 accidents on these roads in 2012 these roads saw 327 accidents which is a huge reduction in accidents. These roads had virtually 25% accidents of the whole of city of Delhi. Talking of individual roads while 17 of these roads showed decline, 3 roads registered increase in accidents and we are working on these roads to show that all roads are amenable to interventions and many accidents are avoidable.
While accidents came down from 102 to 77 on Ring road, there were 50 accidents on Outer Ring road against 63 last year. GT Karnal road saw massive decline from 55 to 27 this year.On Rohtak road accidents have come down to 28 from last year's 42. Mathura road saw huge decline in accidents from 31 last year to 12 this year. National Highway 8 accidents came down from 18 to 12 and on MB road these came down from 22 to 13. Wazirabad road saw decline from 13 to 8 accidents this year while NH24 saw huge reduction in accidents from 16 cases to 6. Road No. 56 saw accidents going down to 10 this year from 14 in first six month in 2011. MG road saw decline in accidents from 13 to 8, Bawana road from 10 to 9, Gurgaon road from 12 to 1, Kanjhawalal road from 9 to 6. Aurobindo Marg saw decline from 7 to 0, Anandmai marg from 5 to 3 and road no. 201 from 6 to 2. Only GT road, Nazafgarh road and Vikas Marg saw increase in accident case and we are working on further interventions on these roads also.
Low cost interventions to reduce accidents included speed calming measures on NH1, NH10, control on commercial vehicles on NH2, speed checks on all these roads, putting up signages, additional pedestrian lights, additional traffic staff and traffic discipline. We will continue our efforts to make city safer for people to move on.
Our drive against drunken driving is showing results and has contributed to reduction of accidents. This year there have been increased prosecutions and as many as 3,329 defaulters have been given jail terms for drunken driving. In 2011 for the whole year imprisonments for drunken driving was 2,960.
