Short Message Service (SMS)
Neil Papworth sent first text to Vodafone GSM on December 1992.
SMS was reintroduced in 1999.
Today SMS is most popular data bearer service within GSM.
SMS uses free capacity of channel.
Up to 160 characters in length.
Supports ASCII and UNICODE. 
 
SMS Architecture:
o 2 types of SMS:
o SM MT (Short Message Mobile Terminated)
o SM MO (Short Message Mobile Originated)
o SM MT is an incoming message.
o (SC->HLR->GMSC->MS)
o SM MO is an outgoing message.
o (MS->VLR->IWMSC->SC)
o SME works as a SMS Gateway.
 
SMPP:
